San Diego International Airport, also known as Lindbergh Field, has great historical aviation significance. The starting point for Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight as well as where the “Spirit of St. Louis” was built, the airport also holds the distinction of being the first federally certified airfield to serve all aircraft types, including seaplanes. During World War II, Lindbergh Field was used exclusively to aid the war effort. Infrastructure improvements made to handle the heavy bombers being manufactured in the region, allowed for the airport to be "jet-ready” long before jet passenger planes came into widespread service.
